Great information but paying a one time fee for your ISRC codes is actually smarter because if you release a dirty, clean, remix, club version, 8 bar intro version for Djs etc. You dont have to keep rereleasing the song through your distributor. You simply just go into the metadata and add the new isrc code to the remix or clean version.

For those interested in assigning ISRC codes to mp3 files; do a google search for "mp3 tag express ISRC". It can batch-assign the ISRC codes for many tracks in one shot, automatically incrementing the designation code for each track. It beats assigning the codes one by one and it's very easy to use.

Getting individual ISRC codes, etc. is now useful to have, since the new Music Modernization Act was passed back in 2018. This means you should get an ISRC code, etc. and register them with the new non profit Mechanical Licensing Collective (MLC) website when it officially goes into effect on January 1 , 2021, and they'll be in charge of collecting your royalties, instead of a digital distribution company. This eliminates the need for the middle man (digital distribution company) that you are paying annual fees toward. I highly recommend everyone to research and learn about this new MMA law. It basically gives the independent, diy musician, songwriter, publisher, etc. control over their mechanical royalties. No more Tunecore, cdbaby, Distrokid, etc.
Also, the new law includes the AMP act, which enables producers, mix engineers, recording engineers, etc. to receive a cut of the mechanical royalties now. The registration process for that will be done through SoundExchange, I believe.
Got to disagree with you there buddy. The point of digital distribution isn’t for mechanical royalties. Digital distributors never paid artists mechanical royalties. You need digital distribution to get your music into digital stores. The only company that collected mechanicals in the US was Harry Fox Agency & they didn’t allow unsigned artists to register. Indie artists couldn’t collect mechanicals really until Songtrust. And you don’t NEED an ISRC code for mechanical royalty collection. The songs are tracked in multiple ways including audio fingerprinting & song title and artist name.
Pay Us No Mind You’re right I didn’t research this thoroughly enough at the time I made this comment, my fault. The music industry can be unnecessarily confusing and complex. Wish all of these collection agencies and what not could just consolidate into just one or two agencies.

ISWC or IPI applies to UK though, u can find this code when u register with prs in the uk . That's what i did and i live in the uk.

I got my ISRC CODE for FREE from the RIAA when they first came out.
Nice breakdown. The only thing I don't see these vids mentioning is what happens when you register a song with ASCAP but then later release it, so you get the ISRC later. How covers are registered is also a mystery because if someone gets their own ISRC for their cover, is it the publisher of the original song who is entering new information into the song registration at the PRO. I'm assuming that one just "edits" the existing registration to do this for the time being. Another gray area is when you have multiple publishers and they each get their own ISWC for the same song, for instance I have non-exclusive libraries who used the same track and got their own ISWC, so it seems like that is also tied to publishing because I can't see how ASCAP could keep track of all the agreements just based on ISRC and so they use ISWC to differentiate . Leave it to modern times to overcomplicate this stuff. lol

UPC vs ISRC ~ You can have one UPC code per song just as you can have one ISRC code per LP album. UPC doesn't necessarily mean a collection of ISRCs. ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS GET YOUR OWN CODES DIRECTLY FROM THE PROPER AGENCIES!! DO NOT USE CODES FROM YOUR DISTRIBUTOR!!! USE YOUR OWN CODES!! Thumbs up though! :-)
I really wanted to give the video a thumbs up but it appears the host doesn’t understand the negative impacts of letting your distributor hand you the ISRC & UPC codes. That was disappointing in an otherwise good video. And it appears he’s doubling down on telling people not to do so.

Okay, so to clarify. We don't need to go with getting our own, even if we decide to switch to another distributor? The reason I ask is because I want to make sure that if I log all the codes (outside of the ones we get in ASCAP), and I happen to change distributors, I would hope they wouldn't just "erase" from memory with that deleted account, if that makes sense?
I was under the guise that people were getting their own because it was cheaper (like UPC codes) and also to safeguard against distributors deleting ISRC codes. But, please advise! Thank you again.

i am asking because i registered with a PRO that is brand new and they are not able to provide IPI numbers yet.(they will be able after 2 weeks) but in the meanwhile i was thinking if i can release a summer song now ( submit it on distrokid and set it 2-3 weeks in advance in order to have a chance to get feautured spotify playlists, and then i was thinking i would be able to take the number from my Pro and register with sngtrust etc. But is this Possible to release a song on Distrokid without IPI number?

Help, please! I registered songs on BMI 5 days ago after I released them and there is no ISWC. What do I do? I am an independent artist, the author.
It’s definitely necessary to get your own ISRC because those codes they give you don’t belong to you, they belong to the DSP meaning when it’s time to get paid, the money goes to them and then they decide how much to give you, which can be as little as 15% in most cases.
What distributor only pays 15%? That sounds like a scam company. Once you get an ISRC code connected to your release, it's yours and the money goes to whoever sets the release up within the platform. If you use an ISRC code for a release on Bandcamp, Bandcamp isn't going to pay Tunecore a penny because you set the account up. There's really no reason to buy ISRC codes yourself unless you're doing digital distribution directly where you have partnerships with Apple, Spotify, etc. or you're not doing digital distribution at all and only selling directly to fans.
@@Payusnomind when you use ISRC and UPC codes from tunecore, those codes belong to them and when it’s time to use the codes to look up to see who needs to get paid, they are registered to tunecore, not the artist. So the money goes to tunecore first and then they take a cut and give you the rest. Nothing is free, those codes cost money so why would they give it to you for free. Read the fine print because this is info they don’t want you to know.

If what you were saying was corrected, anyone that switched from Cd Baby - which takes 9% - to Tunecore - which takes zero - would still be paying Cd Baby 9% because they created the code. I’ve moved an artist from Cd Baby to Tunecore and they get 100% of what they ‘re owed despite the codes having been registered by Cd Baby. You get what I’m saying?
Thank you as always. Should we "own" our UPC codes? As in go to buy our own from GS1, and writing who owns it so that literature can be tracked to the artist or the a rtist's LLC? Or is it okay to just use the UPC/ISRC codes given by the digital distributor?
If you own your IP & are registered with collection societies, you’re good. The obsession with owning codes stems from the perception of artists not being business minded. Artists are now overcompensating by concerning themselves with somewhat insignificant matters because it makes them look more like they’re on top of their business. Don’t fall into the trap.

The codes are automatically generated by the PROs for each songwriter & publisher & for each song by the digital distributor. They’re not codes you have to go out and get.

I'm not sure if ditto is the right choice though i was with them some years back and i pulled my songs down but for reason, they refused to pull my songs down from all the digital platforms it's almost a year now.

I currently looked on ASCAP and realized that all my other works have ISWC codes except for the one I am currently trying to register with Soundexchange. I registered it about a week and half ago so how long does it usually take ASCAP to generate the iswc ?

Considering UPC codes ISRC codes are like social security numbers for songs and albums, there are probably reasons why they try to keep them private. Anybody could collect royalties for other artists' releases using ISRC codes. It's a headache, but I don't know a workaround for asking and storing them in a place you can easily access.
I assigned my own ISRC code to a song, then when I posted it to DistroKid they created another ISRC code. When I register the song at SoundExchange which code do I use? Or do I have to register the song twice, once for each code? Thanks.
You should be able to change the ones they give you to the one you have

I've reviewed a lot of distributors and I haven't found one that doesn't allow you to move your ISRC codes to another distributor. It's pretty much standard, so I don't get the point of paying for your own ISRC codes unless you're into another kind of record collection

A question, if I may. Say I release some songs as singles, one at a time for a while. Then later on I want to release a full album including these songs (previously released as singles). Do I use the same ISRC for them?
it depends on where u get your ISRC CODE from . For me living in the UK, I get my ISRC code from PPL. Now, if it's my first song it will end in 000001, the second song then which is your question, it will end in 000002 meaning the last digit should always change and on and on it goes in chronological order...

If you try to register the song on sound exchange with ISRC codes from the distributor it won’t go through…it didn’t go through because the ISRC code isn’t owned by the artist.

Yes, you would. In the digital world, a single is an album containing one song. When switching distributors, some will only allow you to bring the ISRC code and not the UPC which means the single gets assigned to a new album. You need the UPC though.

@@MadHedCityRUclips Pretty much all distributors outside of CD Baby give you free ISRC & UPC codes at no additional cost. You can look at the feature section on Tunecore, Distrokid, etc. and see that. An artist registering their own ISRC codes is just an unnecessary expense. First, you need to have direct deals with DSPs like Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon and a lot of them don't deal with artists directly. Second, even if you did have direct deals you'd need a way to process all the sales data because you'd have a bunch of excel sheets or txt files with raw data to sort through. Third, if you're selling music direct to fan on your website and skipping Spotify, Apple Music, etc. though it's free to register songs to be tracked by Soundscan, you have to pay subscription fees to see the sales data. Artists should care about owning their masters & their publishing, not ISRC codes.

This is half truth. I am not discrediting all of your message, but what artists need to know the most important part of the music business is it's metadata.
The ISRC is a part of the metadata
This code belongs to the soul owner of the music or video.
If this is developed by a third-party
The ownership belongs to them.
It's like sharing a last name, you are an individual but you are your father's son. This code if generated by the distribution company will be credited as their fingerprint even if the work belongs to you .
This is a major problem in the industry.
We as artist need to seek out and have all the metadata embedded into this "ISRC" code so all the benefits can be tracked to the registrant.
But you don't have to take my word. To each its own 🤜🏽💥🤛🏽
If you read the ISRC hand manual
An ISRC codes is assigned by the rights owner Or an authorized representative.
To be authorized you need to be certified to issues ISRC codes ...so a distribution company is not in anyway listened to distribute ISRC codes ... If a code is given it will belong to the distribution.
Meaning "ALL" your mechanic money will not go directly to you.
